A History of Horse Racing in Saragoga
Saratoga Springs boasts a rich history intertwined with the thrill of thoroughbred racing. It all started modestly, with informal horse exhibitions at county fairs as early as 1822, expanding to an informal dirt track known as “Horse Haven.”
The year 1847 marked a turning point – the construction of the Saratoga Trotting Course in anticipation of the New York State Fair. This dedicated venue paved the way for more organized racing events.
In 1863, John Morrissey organized the first thoroughbred race meet at the Trotting Course, a four-day event that captivated over 5,000 spectators. Morrissey joined forces with others to establish the Saratoga Race Course in 1864, making it the oldest active sporting venue in the country today.
That same year, the Saratoga Racing Association was formed and instituted the prestigious Travers Stakes. Named after William Travers, it is the oldest major thoroughbred race in America, pre-dating the Belmont Stakes by 3 years.
This year, the Saratoga Race Course will make history again as the host of the prestigious Belmont Stakes. Traditionally held at Belmont Park on Long Island, the final leg of the Triple Crown will relocate to Saratoga for the first time ever, further cementing the track’s status as the epicenter of summer racing in America.
