Get Rid of Old, Dusty, Crusty, E-Waste

Smashed glass monitor laying on ground

Finding a place to recycle unwanted electronics, e-waste, in Saratoga County is really difficult! Luckily, I did all the searching and calling for you!! After moving, twice in less than a year, I have really started to appreciate the idea of having less stuff.

Why did we move a bunch of old electronics stuff? Old CD disc changers, VCR’s, old speakers, broken Ryobi drill batteries and chargers, an old fashioned tv? Enough! Let’s get rid of this unwanted, dirty, yucky old stuff. Throwing it away in the garbage bin would be easy, but not good for the environment.

Where to Take E-Waste for Recycling!

Update 9/8/2023

So much has changed since I first wrote this post! Links to other sites with information no longer go to where I intended them to go. Some of the businesses I initially wrote about no longer take e-waste or don’t even exist anymore. Let’s try this again!

Wellspring Saratoga: RECYCLE CELL PHONES & CHARGERS

Wellspring Community Outreach is located at 2816 US-9, Malta, NY 12020. They have a wish list of items they need, so check it out in case you have these items to give as well. They are happy to receive used (and new) cell phones and cell phone chargers. So the next time you change phones and the new one has a different charger, give it to Wellspring. You are helping them, of course, but it’s also FREE E-Waste recycling for you!

Electronics / E-Waste Recycling at Stores

Staples

Staples offers FREE electronic waste drop off and will even pay you to bring it in. Staples has a program on their Staples Connect App where you keep track of what you have brought to the store for recycling. They have a dollar amount set up for certain items you will receive Staples Rewards. Here is a link to a list of all the items Staples will take in the store for recycling. Click here to download a quick guide pdf.

What’s the catch?? You can only bring in recycling once per month and the app keeps track for you. Also, it seems only a few items give you rewards. So maybe just dropping off items and not worrying about be rewarded will allow you to bring things in more often.

Best Buy – Nope

Why is Best Buy not on the list? Simple, they charge fees. There are other free options that are a better choice. On their website, they want $29.99 for TV recycling. Don’t bother. Go to the places listed above.

Thanks for reading! I hope it helps!  :o)

  1. THANK YOU! For putting this together. It really is annoying to search this and sort through all the mis-information.

  2. An awesome update. TYVM. So sad that this country seems not to want to deal with this issue. Will become an environmental disaster sooner than we think. U think old tires along the side of the road r an eye sore? Am seein many tv’s & monitors out there as of late.

  3. You did a great job here wrapping all the local information into one page and it was very clear. Thank you so much.

  4. Saratoga is having a waste drop off day at Spac parking lot on Oct 20th. TV’s are $20. All volunteers, non profit.

  5. Best Buy doesn’t take TV’s over 50 inches, so if you have a 70 inch tv and live in Saratoga Springs there aren’t a lot of options. To cut through the 15 plus calls of headaches (whether you are a resident of a specific town or not) I can tell you that the ERecycle place located at 64 Hannay Lane in Glenmont NY will take larger televisions. They charge 50 cents per pound, which came out to $28 for my 70 inch TV. The place was great but the drive is about 45 minutes each way.

  6. Thank you much, Duane! This information is hard to find, like you said, and I’m so glad you shared your hard work with us. Thank you for being so committed to helping the environment that you drove 45 minutes away! I will put eLot Recycling on the site so more folks can find it.

  8. Thank for the helpful and updated info. Just wanted to mention that Best Buy does not take old microwaves, which I am trying to dispose of today. Home Depot only takes small stuff like cell phones. I tried to search the e-waste site you gave and I wasn’t getting any results. Maybe a temp problem with their site? It looks like I can bring it to Corinth or Queensbury transfer stations -again, thanks for the info.

  9. Sandy – I’m so sorry you having so much trouble trying to recycle your microwave! Doing good for the environment should NOT be this hard. Thank you for the good info about Best Buy and Home Depot. It looks like Queensbury transfer stations take microwaves too. I will keep updating as I find more places for electronics recycling that I find and our readers find. Thanks for reading, Sandy. I’m glad I helped! :o)
